Drupal 7 will reach end-of-life in November 2022. At this point, the CMS will no longer receive updates from the core Drupal community. This means that for websites and applications hosted on Drupal 7, action should be taken to ensure that security patches continue to be applied.

For most websites and applications, firms have two options: upgrade to Drupal 8 or 9 or make use of the Drupal Vendor Extended Support program to ensure that Drupal 7 applications continue to receive critical security updates.

In cases where websites and applications host critical data, we recommend that your system is updated from Drupal 7 to versions 8 or 9.

How to upgrade Drupal 7 to 8/9

The upgrade path from Drupal 7 to version 8 or 9 requires a back-end rebuild of your website or application. This means that whilst the front-end part of your application that users see can remain in place, the underlying architecture will need to change in order to work with a current version of Drupal.

The upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8 and/or 9 requires a full rebuild, however, it is worth noting that once the upgrade to (say) Drupal 8 has been completed, future upgrades to Drupal 9 (or further) will be relatively minor in comparison.

Why upgrade from Drupal 7 to 8/9

The primary reason to upgrade your system from Drupal 7 to 8/9 is to ensure that core security measures and features remain available now and into the future. Drupal 7 applications will no longer be formally maintained by the Drupal community, so without proactive support in place, applications may be at risk of security breaches or failing features.

It is recommended that any mission-critical website or application is migrated onto Drupal 8 or 9.
